From ‘M2’, the art cooperative also known as Maasai Mbili in Kibera, Talisman has selected over 30 works by young and veteran artists of the growing initiative.
We have works by internationally renowned Gomba Otieno and Wycliffe Opondo (Wiki) who began their careers as sign-writers and advertisement painters in the slums long before they transitioned in to the realm of junk art and acrylic painting. We also see playful works by Kevin Irundu (Kevoo Steroo), Ashif, Rabala and resident artist Andre Njoroge, formerly of Kuona Trust Arts Centre.
The mischievous works, inspired by life as it unfolds in the shanties, reveal modern day issues that impact the lives of Nairobians. With a sense of humour about them, the provocative details put a smile on your face. Wiki’s naughty painting of two chickens in conversation reads ‘Love they Neiba bat…dont get cot.’
