Onyis Martin (1987), is an amateur artist who has been allied with both the Nairobi GoDown Arts Centre (for a very brief period after he finished high school), and, recently, with the ‘Journey’ exhibitions at Puniii’s Coffees and Crafts.
Born in Kisumu but raised in Nairobi, Martin began his artistic life as a young student, assisting teachers with their diagrams. Using mixed media including paper collage and cloth, today, his subject matter consists of aspects of everyday life, a lot of which includes figurative paintings of the Kenyan disposition.
Look out for the tiny, interesting collages showing young men desperate in the slums or reacting to the terrorist attacks at Westgate.
As Martin explores different styles, we are privy to some harmonious and some disordered works… all part of the growing pains of becoming an artist. Still one of the new artists on the scene, we have enjoyed watching him come in to his own.
Martin tells us that he has already had the chance to show his work in group and solo exhibitions in Kenya, UK, Taiwan and Denmark. He also works with kids in Mathare and Kibera slums, teaching art and crafts.
Onyis Martin’s exhibition ‘Graduation’ will run at Talisman from Tuesday April 22th to Sunday May 11th, 2014.
