Gifted portraitist Ermias Ekube has his work on display at Talisman June 18 to July 6. Born in 1970 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Ekube enrolled for four years at the Addis Ababa College of Fine Arts and Design (DFA) in 1990. Since 1991, he has participated in several group exhibitions and exhibited about 20 solo exhibitions in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Tanzania, Swaziland, Norway, England, Denmark, Italy and Kenya.
Since 2000, beside teaching art and conducting workshops, Ermias has been exhibiting regularly with 2D and 3D media in different techniques, which inspires many contemporary young Eritrean artists. We won the Second Prize for the Mnjano Art Competition in Nairobi in 2013. Currently he is working full-time in his studio at The Kuona Trust Centre for Visual Arts in Kenya.
Says Ermias, “In the African faces, I see pain and endurance at the same time. That is my search of spiritual quality in the eyes of my subjects. Through the fast and clear marks of the brush works, I want to achieve a pull and push quality of special abstraction in the given picture plane.”
Come out to enjoy these bright, energetic canvases and strong characters created by this talented artist. Ermias also accepts commissions for portraits for both individuals and family groups.
