Ugandan artist Yusuf Ssali is known for blending mixed media with a riot of colors, which is traditional to African storytelling. Masterful in abstract compositions, Yusuf is also captivated by the human form and the interplay of colors, and in so doing, highlights the figures that populate his canvas. Yusuf started painting professionally from the age of 20, after observing and learning from fellow artists. He works mainly in oil and acrylic on canvas and likes to incorporate mixed media such as bark cloth, twine and metal. His favorite subject is women. “My source of inspiration is drawn from the day to day traditions of African women, surrounded by nature.” Yusuf’s work is on show at Talisman from the 23rd of February.
